We have two daughters, aged 4 and 3, so needless to say, Unicorns are pretty big in our house. We were shopping for Friday Night Movie Night/Ice Cream Night a while back and found these fun little swirled chocolate chips that were pink and white. While we shopped, we also picked up a package of multi-colored sprinkles.
It was Friday Night Movie Night at our house, and all I had were Yasso bars in the fridge, so I decided to whip up some brownies. While I'm a big fan of a box of Dark Chocolate Ghirardelli brownies, something about homemade brownies just felt right. The addition of the swirled chocolate chips and the sprinkles made it feel a little extra special too. While these are not a necessary addition, chocolate chips or good old fashioned powdered sugar would be just fine! They're dense, chewy, sweet and super yummy!!
Homemade brownies are very simple to whip up! They take minimal ingredients and honestly you probably already have all the ingredients necessary to make them! I used brown sugar in mine so it created a little bit of a caramelized effect on the tops of them after they cooled. I think I liked them better cold than I did fresh out of the oven, but you decide.
Get your oven preheated to 375°.
And next, get your butter melted! Watch carefully to ensure you have your sugar concoction ready to add to the butter as soon as it's done melting so that the butter doesn't brown too much. This will create a nutty flavor, and while appropriate for some dishes, I wanted the richness from the butter without the nutty flavor. Next add in your white sugar, brown sugar and vanilla extract. Keep your heat low and give it a good stir so that the sugar begins melting into the butter.
Next you will need to add in your milk, heavy cream, or milk substitute. I used unsweetened almond milk as I don't drink milk and absolutely planned to have some of these :)
In the meantime, work on your dry ingredients while the milk and sugar mixture lightly simmers on the stove. You'll add in flour, cocoa, salt and baking powder and mix well in a bowl.
Add the two ingredients together well and mix.
Add your brownie mixture into an 8x8 glass pan that has been greased. You'll sprinkle your chocolate chips or unicorn chips, whatever you have on top and bake for around 18 minutes until the middle of the brownies has begun to set.
Sprinkle with sprinkles once they come out and the chocolate chips are warm. This ensures the sprinkles adhere to the chocolate chips and it gives it the most decadent little crunch with each bite! Enjoy!
